Useful God (Yong Shen) 用神
Yòng Shén · The element a chart most needs — the target of every traditional remedy.
What it means
The Yong Shen is the element a chart is judged to need most. A reader first decides whether the Day Master is strong or weak relative to the rest of the chart, then picks the element that best restores balance: something to support a weak Day Master, or something to drain and control a strong one. That element becomes the basis of every recommendation that follows.
Why it matters
This is the step where practitioners genuinely disagree, and it is worth knowing that. Strength assessment depends on how you weight the month branch, hidden stems, combinations and clashes, and different schools weight them differently — so two competent readers can pick different Useful Gods from the same eight characters. Any source presenting the choice as mechanical is overstating the certainty.
Where this site uses it
This site does not publish a Yong Shen for you, because the judgement is not something a table can settle. It publishes the inputs instead: the full chart, the hidden stems and the element relations, so the reasoning stays visible.
