Rat Chinese Zodiac Sign
First of the twelve, the midnight branch: watchful, thrifty and quick to spot an opening.
The Rat holds the branch Zi, the first of the twelve and the one the almanac places at midnight. That position is the whole argument of the sign. Zi is not the middle of the night as an ending; in the classical scheme it is the moment when the first thread of yang appears inside the deepest yin, which is why the eleventh solar month, beginning at Major Snow, belongs to it. A sign that starts its day in the dark and its year in the snow is read as one that notices movement before anyone else does.
The folk race that fixed the order of the animals is usually told as a joke at the Rat's expense: too small to swim the river, it rode on the Ox and jumped off at the bank to finish first. Read less cynically it is a description of how the branch works. The Rat's classical asset is not force but timing and a willingness to use whatever is already moving. Water is its fixed element, and water in the five-element scheme is the element of depth, storage and quiet accumulation rather than display.

Rat strengths
Traditional descriptions of Zi people cluster around perception and economy. They are credited with reading a room quickly, remembering who owes what to whom, and finding the small advantage that others walk past — the discount, the shortcut, the person worth knowing. Almanac writers link the sign to granaries and counting-houses, so thrift appears again and again: not meanness, but an instinct for margins and for keeping something in reserve. Sociability is the other half. The Rat is rarely described as a loner in these texts; it is described as the sign that knows everybody and can ask for a favour without embarrassment.
Rat weaknesses
The same texts are candid about the cost. A sign built on calculation can over-calculate, turning a simple decision into a running audit of alternatives, and Zi is often warned against restlessness — starting a fourth thing before the third is finished. Hoarding is the traditional caricature: keeping contacts, options and objects long past their usefulness because letting go feels like loss. Because the Rat trusts its own read of a situation, delegation is described as hard, and because it enjoys knowing things, the classical caution is about gossip: information handled carelessly is the way this sign is said to lose the network it worked to build.
The five types of Rat
The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Rat years it covers between 1900 and 2043.
Wood Rat · 甲子 (Jia Zi)
Years: 1924, 1984
Wood Rat (Jia Zi) opens the whole sixty-year cycle, so it carries the flavour of a beginning. Water under Wood is the producing relationship — the branch feeds the stem — and the reading is of a Rat whose plans grow outward rather than inward: teaching, organising, building something other people can join. The classical caution is over-extension, because Wood keeps drawing on the water beneath it.
Fire Rat · 丙子 (Bing Zi)
Years: 1936, 1996
Fire Rat (Bing Zi) sets a yang Fire stem directly over a Water branch, so the pairing is one of controlled opposition. Tradition reads it as visible energy over a private base: an outgoing, persuasive Rat who nevertheless keeps the real accounting to itself. Bing Zi is often described as the most sociable of the five, and the standard advice is about pacing rather than confidence.
Earth Rat · 戊子 (Wu Zi)
Years: 1948, 2008
Earth Rat (Wu Zi) puts Earth above Water, the controlling relationship, and the traditional image is of an embankment. Planning becomes structure: this variant is associated with administration, property and patience with slow processes. The note of caution is rigidity — a Rat that has built good systems can defend them past the point where they still fit.
Metal Rat · 庚子 (Geng Zi)
Years: 1900, 1960, 2020
Metal Rat (Geng Zi) has the branch's element produced by the stem, Metal generating Water, so the reserves are constantly topped up. Geng Zi is described as decisive and hard-edged, quicker to cut a losing arrangement than the other four. The classical warning attaches to sharpness in speech: the sign is read as saying the accurate thing at the least comfortable moment.
Water Rat · 壬子 (Ren Zi)
Years: 1912, 1972, 2032
Water Rat (Ren Zi) doubles the element, stem and branch both Water, which the texts treat as the purest and least anchored version of the sign. Intuition, mobility and a talent for reading currents are the stock descriptions, along with the stock caution: without a solid commitment to give it banks, the water spreads. This is the variant most often advised to finish things.
Years in this table are calendar years. The zodiac year actually turns at Lichun (立春), around 4 February, not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year — so anyone born in January or early February of a listed year may belong to the previous sign. Check a specific date and time with the zodiac calculator. Check a birth date against Lichun.
Best and hardest matches for the Rat
| Sign | Score | Relationship in the branch tables | Full reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ox | 90 | Six Harmony 六合 | Rat and Ox |
| Dragon | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Rat and Dragon |
| Monkey | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Rat and Monkey |
| Goat | 40 | Harm 六害 | Rat and Goat |
| Horse | 30 | Clash 六冲 | Rat and Horse |
The branch tables put the Rat's closest tie with the Ox, its Six Harmony partner — the pairing the almanac reads as complementary temperaments rather than similar ones. Its Three Harmony frame is the water trine with the Dragon and the Monkey, traditionally a working alliance: ambition, invention and calculation in one group. The opposite branch is the Horse, the Six Clash, which the texts describe as two incompatible tempos rather than two enemies. The Goat sits in the harm relationship with Zi, and the Rooster in destruction, both read as friction that shows up in small recurring ways.
Lucky colours, numbers and direction
| Role | Element | Colours | Numbers | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own element (子) | Water 水 | black, blue | 1, 6 | North |
| Supporting element (produces Water) | Metal 金 | white, gold | 4, 9 | West |
Because Zi's fixed element is Water, the sign's traditional colours are black and blue, its numbers one and six from the He Tu water pair, and its direction due North — the compass point the twenty-four mountains assign to the branch. The element that produces Water is Metal, so white and gold, four and nine, and the West are the classical supporting set. These are cultural correspondences, not a forecast.
The Rat in 2027
This page describes the sign itself, which does not change from year to year. For what the 2027 Fire Goat year does to the Rat — the Tai Sui relationship, the five-element reading and a month-by-month table — see the year page. Rat in 2027.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is the Rat first when it is the smallest animal?
- Two answers circulate. The folk answer is the river race, where the Rat arrived first by riding the Ox. The calendrical answer is older and more useful: the twelve animals were attached to branches that already existed, and the branch Zi was already first because it marks midnight and the eleventh solar month, the turning point where yang begins again. The animal inherited the position rather than winning it.
- Is the Rat sign considered unlucky in the West because of the animal?
- The English word carries associations the Chinese one does not. In the almanac tradition the Zi branch is linked with stored grain, fertility and the beginning of a cycle, and the sign is read as resourceful rather than dirty or treacherous. Translation is the problem, not the sign. Some English-language sites use "Mouse" for this reason.
- Which hours belong to the Rat, and does it matter for a birth chart?
- The Zi double-hour runs from 23:00 to 00:59 in local true solar time, and it does matter: it becomes the hour pillar of anyone born in that window. It is also the one hour with a genuine dispute attached, since the two-hour block straddles midnight and schools differ on whether 23:00 to 23:59 belongs to the current day or the next.
