Rabbit Chinese Zodiac Sign
Sunrise and the spring equinox month: tact, taste and a strong instinct for the exit.
The Rabbit holds Mao, the fourth branch, the sunrise hours from five to seven and the second solar month, which opens at Awakening of Insects and contains the spring equinox. Mao is the only wood branch with a single hidden stem, Yi, which makes it the purest Wood position in the system — growth already established rather than sprouting. Where the Tiger month is the risk of starting, the Rabbit month is the part of spring when the outcome is no longer in doubt and the work is to grow evenly.
The animal carries an unusual amount of cultural freight. The moon rabbit pounding the elixir is one of the oldest images in East Asian art, which attaches the sign to the moon, to night gardens and to the Mid-Autumn Festival; the Vietnamese zodiac replaces the rabbit with the cat, so the same branch has two animals depending on where the calendar is printed. Both readings pull the sign in the same direction: elegance, indirectness and self-protection.

Rabbit strengths
Descriptions of Mao emphasise social intelligence exercised quietly. The sign is credited with sensing the temperature of a room and adjusting before anyone raises their voice, which the texts treat as a genuine skill rather than timidity — this is the branch associated with diplomats, negotiators and the person who makes an impossible dinner table work. Taste is the second recurring theme: an eye for proportion, material and appearance that shows up in homes, clothes and design work. The third is prudence. The proverb about the cunning hare keeping three burrows is quoted approvingly; having somewhere else to go is read as competence, not cowardice.
Rabbit weaknesses
The cost of avoiding friction is that problems get managed rather than solved. The classical caution for Mao is conflict avoidance carried too far: agreements made to end an uncomfortable conversation, resentment stored instead of stated, and decisions deferred until circumstances make them. The sign is also described as sensitive to slights that were never intended, and as retreating from people rather than telling them what went wrong. Comfort is the other warning — a strong preference for pleasant surroundings is read as making the sign slow to accept a period of hardship even when it is the shortest route through.
The five types of Rabbit
The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Rabbit years it covers between 1900 and 2043.
Wood Rabbit · 乙卯 (Yi Mao)
Years: 1915, 1975, 2035
Wood Rabbit (Yi Mao) doubles a yin Wood stem over a yin Wood branch, the least mixed form of the sign. Yi is the climbing plant rather than the tree, so the tradition reads it as flexibility raised to a principle: adaptation, indirect routes, and survival by bending. The classical caution is that a Rabbit with nothing firm in the chart has no position of its own to defend.
Fire Rabbit · 丁卯 (Ding Mao)
Years: 1927, 1987
Fire Rabbit (Ding Mao) has Wood feeding Fire, the output relationship, and the reading is of taste turned into expression — performance, writing, design, teaching. Ding Mao is described as the warmest and most openly charming of the five, and the standard caution concerns the energy drawn out of the branch: this variant is advised to protect its rest.
Earth Rabbit · 己卯 (Ji Mao)
Years: 1939, 1999
Earth Rabbit (Ji Mao) sets Earth under Wood, the element the branch controls, which the texts read as a Rabbit with a practical target for its diplomacy. It is the variant linked with property, hospitality and steady household management, and the one most likely to convert social skill into assets. The caution is a tendency to measure relationships by what they secure.
Metal Rabbit · 辛卯 (Xin Mao)
Years: 1951, 2011
Metal Rabbit (Xin Mao) puts refined Metal over Wood, the controlling relationship, and the tradition treats it as elegance with a blade in it. Judgement sharpens: standards of quality, an unsentimental read of people, a willingness to end things cleanly. The classical note is that the pressure falls on the branch, so this variant is described as harder on itself than it looks.
Water Rabbit · 癸卯 (Gui Mao)
Years: 1903, 1963, 2023
Water Rabbit (Gui Mao) has Water producing Wood, the resource relationship, and the reading is of a Rabbit fed by study and by other people's support: scholarly, receptive, unusually good at absorbing what it is taught. Gui is dew rather than river, so the descriptions emphasise subtlety, and the caution is passivity — waiting to be given the opening instead of making one.
Years in this table are calendar years. The zodiac year actually turns at Lichun (立春), around 4 February, not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year — so anyone born in January or early February of a listed year may belong to the previous sign. Check a specific date and time with the zodiac calculator. Check a birth date against Lichun.
Best and hardest matches for the Rabbit
| Sign | Score | Relationship in the branch tables | Full reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog | 90 | Six Harmony 六合 | Rabbit and Dog |
| Goat | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Rabbit and Goat |
| Pig | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Rabbit and Pig |
| Dragon | 40 | Harm 六害 | Rabbit and Dragon |
| Rooster | 30 | Clash 六冲 | Rabbit and Rooster |
Mao's Six Harmony partner is the Dog, a pairing the tables read as combining into Fire and the tradition reads as trust: the guard and the diplomat. Its Three Harmony frame is the wood trine with the Pig and the Goat, a group associated with kindness, aesthetics and a shared dislike of conflict. Directly opposite is the Rooster, the Six Clash, the classical image of blunt speech meeting careful speech. The Dragon stands in harm to the Rabbit, the Horse in destruction, and Mao is also half of the Zi–Mao punishment with the Rat, which the texts label the punishment of discourtesy.
Lucky colours, numbers and direction
| Role | Element | Colours | Numbers | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own element (卯) | Wood 木 | green, teal | 3, 8 | East |
| Supporting element (produces Wood) | Water 水 | black, blue | 1, 6 | North |
Mao's fixed element is Wood, giving the sign green and teal as its traditional colours, three and eight as its numbers, and due East as its direction — the branch sits exactly at East on the twenty-four mountain compass. The producing element is Water, so black and blue, one and six, and the North are the classical supporting set. These are traditional correspondences and nothing more.
The Rabbit in 2027
This page describes the sign itself, which does not change from year to year. For what the 2027 Fire Goat year does to the Rabbit — the Tai Sui relationship, the five-element reading and a month-by-month table — see the year page. Rabbit in 2027.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is the Rabbit a cat in Vietnam?
- The Vietnamese zodiac uses the cat for the fourth branch, and the usual explanation is linguistic: the Chinese word for rabbit, mao, is close to the Sino-Vietnamese reading for cat. Rice-growing regions also had practical reasons to honour the cat. The branch itself is unchanged, so every relationship and date in the tables works identically under either animal.
- Is the Rabbit the weakest sign in the compatibility tables?
- No. Score tables are built from the six branch relationships, and Mao has a Six Harmony partner and a full Three Harmony frame like every other branch. What makes the sign look mild is the reading style attached to it, not the arithmetic. Its clash with the Rooster scores the same as any other clash.
- What does the Rabbit month mean in a birth chart?
- The Mao month runs from Awakening of Insects to Pure Brightness, roughly early March to early April, and anyone born inside it has Mao as their month branch regardless of their year animal. The month pillar is read as the branch of career and of the family one grows up in, so Mao there is taken as a temperament shaped by growth conditions rather than by a single dramatic event.
