Dragon Chinese Zodiac Sign

The Dragon holds Chen, the fifth branch, the morning hours from seven to nine and the third solar month opening at Pure Brightness. Chen is an Earth branch, but like the other three seasonal closers it is a storehouse — the vault that holds Water, which is why the sign is read as containing much more than it displays. Its month is late spring, the point in the agricultural year when the weather decides the harvest, and the Chinese dragon is a weather spirit before it is anything else: the bringer of rain, petitioned at dragon-king temples in a drought.

It is also the only animal in the twelve with no living counterpart, and that alone changes how the sign is described. There is no natural behaviour to reason from, so the readings work from imperial symbolism and from the branch's structure instead. The result is a sign the tradition associates with scale — large plans, visible roles, weather that affects everyone — and with the particular strain of being watched while doing something difficult.

Chen is credited with imagination at a size other signs do not attempt, and with the confidence to say the ambitious version out loud. Texts describe a natural authority that does not have to be claimed, an ability to make other people believe a plan is already real, and unusual tolerance for visibility. The storehouse gives the second cluster of traits: hidden reserves, more knowledge and more capacity than the sign shows on a normal day, which is why the readings associate the Dragon with rising to an occasion. Generosity of spirit is the third — the sign is described as quick to champion other people's work once it respects it.

Chen is one of the four branches that punish themselves, and the classical reading of self-punishment is pressure with no external author: standards nobody else set, comparison against an imagined version of the work, frustration turned inward. The texts pair this with impatience for the ordinary — routine, maintenance and small courtesies are said to be where the Dragon loses people. Pride appears as the standard warning, less as vanity than as difficulty asking for help while the plan is still unfinished. Because the sign is read as dramatic, there is also a caution about scale for its own sake: choosing the large version of a problem when the small one was the real one.

The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Dragon years it covers between 1900 and 2043.

Chen's Six Harmony partner is the Rooster, the pair that combines into Metal, which the tradition reads as vision matched with precision — the sign most able to hold the Dragon to a specification. Its Three Harmony frame is the water trine with the Rat and the Monkey, an alliance of scale, calculation and invention. Opposite sits the Dog, the Six Clash, described as the vault of water against the vault of fire. The Rabbit is in harm with Chen and the Ox in destruction, and the branch also punishes itself when a second Chen appears in the chart.

Chen's fixed element is Earth, so the traditional colours are yellow and brown, the numbers five and ten, and the direction the centre in the five-element scheme, with East-southeast as the branch's own sector on the compass. Fire produces Earth, so red and purple, two and seven, and the South make up the classical supporting set. These are cultural correspondences, not forecasts.
