Goat Chinese Zodiac Sign
The midsummer branch and the vault of wood: gentleness, craft and a well-defended reticence.
The Goat holds Wei, the eighth branch, the early-afternoon hours from one to three and the sixth solar month, which opens at Minor Heat. Its fixed element is Earth, hot and dry earth at the height of summer, and like the other three seasonal closers it is a storehouse — the vault that holds Wood. That structure is the reason readings of this sign keep returning to things kept rather than shown: stored talent, stored feeling, and a great deal of thinking that never reaches the conversation.
English has three names for the animal — Goat, Sheep and Ram — because the Chinese word yang covers the whole family, and translators have chosen differently for a century. The auspicious phrase san yang kai tai, three yang open prosperity, is written with the character for sheep as a pun, which is why the sign appears on New Year decorations far more often than its reputation for mildness would suggest. In 2027 the Goat also holds the year, which makes this the sign under the Tai Sui.

Goat strengths
Wei is credited with the gentlest temperament in the twelve, and the tradition is specific about what that means: genuine consideration for how a decision lands on other people, tolerance for those who are difficult, and an unusual capacity to forgive. Artistic ability is the second constant — the sign is associated with craft, music, textiles, cooking and anything where patience and taste matter more than speed. The third is resilience of an unobvious kind. Because the branch stores Wood, readings describe reserves that only appear under pressure: a sign that looks easy to push over and then does not move.
Goat weaknesses
The classical cautions all concern what goes unsaid. Wei is described as agreeing in the room and disagreeing afterwards, as absorbing far more than it reports, and as allowing a small injustice to stand because objecting would be unpleasant. Dependence appears next: a preference for arrangements where someone else carries the risk, which the texts read as a habit rather than an incapacity. Worry is the third, and it is described as private, circular and largely invisible. The branch also sits in the Chou–Xu–Wei punishment of power, traditionally read as trouble arising between people who each believe they were the one being reasonable.
The five types of Goat
The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Goat years it covers between 1900 and 2043.
Wood Goat · 乙未 (Yi Wei)
Years: 1955, 2015
Wood Goat (Yi Wei) sets yin Wood over the wood vault, stem and stored element agreeing, so the tradition reads it as the most openly creative of the five — the variant whose talent is visible rather than banked. Yi Wei is associated with design, writing and cultivation. The caution is that Wood on dry summer Earth needs watering: this variant depends on encouragement more than it admits.
Fire Goat · 丁未 (Ding Wei)
Years: 1907, 1967, 2027
Fire Goat (Ding Wei) is the 2027 combination itself, yin Fire over hot Earth, the producing relationship. Readings emphasise warmth turned outward — hospitality, care work, teaching, the person who holds a family or a team together. The classical caution is depletion, since Fire feeding Earth spends itself, and Ding Wei is described as giving past the point where it should stop.
Earth Goat · 己未 (Ji Wei)
Years: 1919, 1979, 2039
Earth Goat (Ji Wei) doubles the element and is the most self-contained version of the sign. Stem and branch both Earth gives the texts an image of ground closed over the vault: very hard to read, very slow to move, unusually attached to home and to routine. The caution is that the stored Wood is hardest to release here, so the talent needs an external deadline.
Metal Goat · 辛未 (Xin Wei)
Years: 1931, 1991
Metal Goat (Xin Wei) puts Metal over the wood vault, the controlling relationship, and the reading is craft with a standard attached — refinement, editing, the ability to discard nine attempts and keep the tenth. Xin Wei is described as the most quietly demanding of the five, and the classical note is that the demand is turned on the sign's own work first.
Water Goat · 癸未 (Gui Wei)
Years: 1943, 2003
Water Goat (Gui Wei) has Earth controlling Water, so the branch works on the stem, and the tradition reads it as feeling managed rather than expressed. It is the most sensitive and most private variant, associated with counselling, care and the arts, with a caution about carrying other people's difficulties home and keeping them there.
Years in this table are calendar years. The zodiac year actually turns at Lichun (立春), around 4 February, not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year — so anyone born in January or early February of a listed year may belong to the previous sign. Check a specific date and time with the zodiac calculator. Check a birth date against Lichun.
Best and hardest matches for the Goat
| Sign | Score | Relationship in the branch tables | Full reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse | 90 | Six Harmony 六合 | Goat and Horse |
| Rabbit | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Goat and Rabbit |
| Pig | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Goat and Pig |
| Dog | 30 | Punishment 三刑 + Destruction 六破 | Goat and Dog |
| Ox | 10 | Clash 六冲 + Punishment 三刑 | Goat and Ox |
Wei's Six Harmony partner is the Horse, the tables' strongest positive tie for this sign and the one that supplies momentum it does not generate itself. Its Three Harmony frame is the wood trine with the Rabbit and the Pig, a group the tradition reads as the gentle alliance — taste, kindness and a shared avoidance of confrontation. Directly opposite is the Ox, the Six Clash, the wood vault against the metal vault, and the tables score it as the hardest pairing in the sign's row. The Rat stands in harm with Wei, the Dog in destruction, and the Dog also shares the Chou–Xu–Wei punishment group.
Lucky colours, numbers and direction
| Role | Element | Colours | Numbers | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own element (未) | Earth 土 | yellow, brown | 5, 10 | Centre |
| Supporting element (produces Earth) | Fire 火 | red, purple | 2, 7 | South |
Wei's fixed element is Earth, so the sign's traditional colours are yellow and brown, its numbers five and ten, and its direction the centre in the five-element scheme, with South-southwest as the branch's own compass sector — the Tai Sui sector for 2027. Fire produces Earth, so red and purple, two and seven, and the South are the classical supporting set. These are correspondences, not predictions.
The Goat in 2027
This page describes the sign itself, which does not change from year to year. For what the 2027 Fire Goat year does to the Goat — the Tai Sui relationship, the five-element reading and a month-by-month table — see the year page. Goat in 2027.

Frequently asked questions
- Goat, Sheep or Ram — which is correct?
- All three translate the same word. Chinese yang covers goats and sheep together, and the character shows a horned head without distinguishing the species; regional custom in northern China leans towards sheep and in the south towards goats. Choose whichever English word you like — the branch Wei, its hours, its element and every relationship in the tables are unaffected.
- Why do people say the Goat is an unlucky sign to be born under?
- There is a modern folk saying, repeated mostly in parts of northern China, that only a minority of Goats end up comfortable. It appears to be a twentieth-century invention rather than a classical doctrine, and nothing in the branch tables singles Wei out. The New Year phrase san yang kai tai, which uses the same character, points the other way.
- What happens to the Goat in its own year, 2027?
- Sharing the year branch is called Ben Ming Nian, the presiding relationship with the Tai Sui. The almanac tradition reads it as a year of transition rather than misfortune, and prescribes the same customs it always has: settling the Tai Sui at the start of the year and wearing red received as a gift. The detail for 2027 is on the Goat's year page.
