Rooster Chinese Zodiac Sign

Dusk and pure metal: exactness, visible standards and a voice that carries further than intended.

The Rooster holds You, the tenth branch, the hours from five to seven in the evening and the eighth solar month, which opens at White Dew and contains the autumn equinox. Metal is its fixed element, and You is the purest metal position in the system — the only one of the two metal branches with a single hidden stem, Xin, refined metal rather than ore. Readings of the sign take that literally: nothing mixed in, nothing softened, a temperament with the edges left on.

The animal supplies the other half. A rooster announces the hour whether or not the household wants to hear it, and it does so on time, every time; before clocks it was the instrument that organised the working day. Descriptions of You accordingly combine punctuality, dependability and a certain indifference to whether the announcement is welcome. The branch also sits exactly at West on the compass and in the eighth month, the season of harvest and of sorting what is worth keeping.

The Rooster at a glance

Every row is read from the branch tables: fixed element, polarity, trine, double hour, solar month and compass sector all belong to the branch, not to the animal.

Rooster strengths

Exactness is the signature. The Rooster is credited with noticing the discrepancy everyone else has scrolled past, with keeping records that survive scrutiny, and with a standard of finish that does not drop when nobody is checking. The tradition pairs this with unusual candour: the sign says the true thing, including the inconvenient true thing, and readings treat that as integrity rather than rudeness. Industriousness is the third theme — You is associated with early starts, long preparation and visible effort — and appearance is the fourth, since this is the branch the texts link with grooming, presentation and taking the trouble to look the part.

Rooster weaknesses

Pure metal has no give in it. The classical cautions describe criticism delivered accurately and received badly, a habit of correcting detail in situations where the detail was not the point, and difficulty distinguishing a standard from a preference. Because the sign values being right, apologising is described as disproportionately hard. Vanity appears in the folk material, usually as over-attention to how things look from outside. You is also one of the four self-punishing branches, and the reading fits the rest: the harshest audit the Rooster performs is on itself, conducted privately and without an appeal process.

The five types of Rooster

The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Rooster years it covers between 1900 and 2043.

Wood Rooster · 乙酉 (Yi You)

Years: 1945, 2005

Wood Rooster (Yi You) puts yin Wood over a Metal branch, so the branch cuts the stem — the tradition's image of pruning. The reading is exactness applied to growing things: editing, cultivation, teaching, the patient improvement of someone else's work. Yi You is described as the most tactful of the five, with a caution that the tact hides how much correction is going on.

Fire Rooster · 丁酉 (Ding You)

Years: 1957, 2017

Fire Rooster (Ding You) sets yin Fire over refined Metal, the controlling relationship, and the classical image is the goldsmith's flame — heat used deliberately to shape something valuable. The variant is read as the most expressive: performance, advocacy, argument made elegant. The caution is that the flame is applied to people as readily as to work.

Earth Rooster · 己酉 (Ji You)

Years: 1909, 1969, 2029

Earth Rooster (Ji You) has Earth producing Metal, so the stem feeds the branch, and the reading is precision with patience behind it. It is the variant associated with administration, accounting, agriculture and long institutional service — the Rooster that builds the system rather than only enforcing it. The caution is that a well-built system becomes the thing being defended.

Metal Rooster · 辛酉 (Xin You)

Years: 1921, 1981, 2041

Metal Rooster (Xin You) doubles the branch's own stem and is the most unmixed version of the sign in the entire cycle. Descriptions emphasise discrimination raised to an art — quality, taste, an unerring eye for what is second-rate — and an insistence on doing things properly that others find exhausting. The classical caution concerns loneliness at that standard.

Water Rooster · 癸酉 (Gui You)

Years: 1933, 1993

Water Rooster (Gui You) has Metal producing Water, the output relationship, and the reading is exactness turned into communication: writing, analysis, explanation, the ability to make a precise thing intelligible. Gui You is the most reflective of the five and the least combative. The caution is that the branch spends itself producing, so this variant is advised to protect its own reserves.

Years in this table are calendar years. The zodiac year actually turns at Lichun (立春), around 4 February, not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year — so anyone born in January or early February of a listed year may belong to the previous sign. Check a specific date and time with the zodiac calculator. Check a birth date against Lichun.

Best and hardest matches for the Rooster

Only signs that stand in a recorded relationship appear here: the highest-scoring harmonies first, then the lowest-scoring clashes, harms, punishments and destructions. Signs with no entry in any of the six tables are neither — they are left out rather than listed as a match. Scores do not change with the year.

Rabbit30Clash 六冲Rooster and Rabbit

You's Six Harmony partner is the Dragon, the pair that combines into Metal and which the tradition reads as vision given a specification — the sign most able to make the Dragon's plan buildable. Its Three Harmony frame is the metal trine with the Snake and the Ox, the alliance of strategy, precision and endurance, and the group where the Rooster's standards are least resented. Directly opposite is the Rabbit, the Six Clash: blunt speech against careful speech. The Dog stands in harm with You, the Rat in destruction, and the branch punishes itself when a second You appears.

Lucky colours, numbers and direction

Taken from the five-element correspondences for the sign's own branch and for the element that produces it. Year-specific lucky elements are different and live on the year page.

Own element (酉)Metal 金white, gold4, 9West
Supporting element (produces Metal)Earth 土yellow, brown5, 10Centre

You's fixed element is Metal, giving the sign white and gold as its traditional colours, four and nine as its numbers, and due West as its direction — the branch sits exactly at West on the twenty-four mountain compass. Earth produces Metal, so yellow and brown, five and ten, and the centre are the classical supporting set. These correspondences come from the five-element tables and imply nothing about outcomes.

The Rooster in 2027

This page describes the sign itself, which does not change from year to year. For what the 2027 Fire Goat year does to the Rooster — the Tai Sui relationship, the five-element reading and a month-by-month table — see the year page. Rooster in 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Rooster branch hold only one hidden stem?
Only three branches do — Zi, Mao and You, the ones sitting at the exact middle of winter, spring and autumn, where a single element is at full strength and nothing else is transitioning. You holds only Xin, Mao only Yi, Zi only Gui. The branches that open the seasons and the four storehouses hold two or three stems each, because they are mixtures by definition.
Is the Rooster sign associated with vanity?
Folk descriptions say so, and the almanac tradition is more precise: the branch is pure refined Metal, the element of value, finish and discrimination, so attention to appearance is read as part of the same faculty that produces high standards at work. Whether it reads as vanity or as professionalism depends on the observer, not on the tables.
What time is the Rooster hour and why does it matter?
The You double-hour runs from 17:00 to 18:59 in local true solar time, the dusk block when a rooster is traditionally said to return to the coop. It matters because it becomes the hour pillar in a birth chart, and the hour pillar is read as the branch of later life and of children — which is why an accurate birth time, corrected for longitude, changes a reading.
