Snake Chinese Zodiac Sign
The little dragon of early summer: strategy, privacy and periodic reinvention.
The Snake holds Si, the sixth branch, the late-morning hours from nine to eleven and the fourth solar month, which opens at Start of Summer. Fire is its fixed element, but Si holds three hidden stems — Bing, Geng and Wu, Fire with Metal and Earth beneath it — and that mixture is the key to how the sign is read. The surface is warmth and ease; the structure underneath is metal, which the tradition takes as the sign's capacity for cold assessment while appearing perfectly relaxed.
In Chinese usage the snake is the little dragon, xiao long, and the two share iconography, seasonal association and a reputation for hidden depth. The animal's habit of shedding its skin gives the sign its other stock theme: renewal by discarding what is finished. Descriptions of Si accordingly emphasise transformation on the sign's own schedule — a career changed, a circle of friends quietly replaced, a version of itself put down without announcement.

Snake strengths
Si is credited with the clearest strategic sight in the twelve. The classical picture is of a sign that watches longer than others find comfortable, says less than it knows, and acts once — which is why the readings associate it with research, investigation, diagnosis and any work where the first move should be the correct one. Composure is the second theme: the Snake is described as unusually hard to panic and as keeping its voice level in situations that raise everyone else's. The third is taste for depth, in study, in conversation and in relationships, with a matching impatience for small talk.
Snake weaknesses
Privacy is the strength and the trap. The traditional cautions describe a sign that withholds by default, tells people what they need rather than what is true, and lets a suspicion grow for months without testing it. Because Si is confident in its own analysis, it is also described as slow to revise a conclusion once formed, and as capable of a long, silent verdict on a person who never learns they were tried. Jealousy appears in the folk descriptions, and the almanac note is more specific: this branch sits in the Yin–Si–Shen punishment group, read as friction with allies, especially where obligation and money mix.
The five types of Snake
The animal repeats every twelve years but the stem above it repeats every ten, so each sign comes in five element variants and the same combination only returns after sixty years. Each variant below lists the Snake years it covers between 1900 and 2043.
Wood Snake · 乙巳 (Yi Si)
Years: 1905, 1965, 2025
Wood Snake (Yi Si) feeds the branch's Fire with yin Wood, the producing relationship, and the reading is strategy with sociability laid over it: the most approachable of the five, good at building the network the analysis needs. Yi is the climbing plant, so the tradition emphasises indirect routes and patience, with a caution about depending on other people's structures.
Fire Snake · 丁巳 (Ding Si)
Years: 1917, 1977, 2037
Fire Snake (Ding Si) doubles the element and is the most intense version of the sign. Stem and branch both Fire gives the texts their picture of concentrated attention — obsessive study, strong convictions, a quiet person with a very hot centre. The classical caution is that Ding burns inward, and this variant is described as consuming itself over things it never mentions.
Earth Snake · 己巳 (Ji Si)
Years: 1929, 1989
Earth Snake (Ji Si) draws out the branch's hidden Earth, since Si already stores Wu. Fire producing Earth gives a settled, practical Snake — the variant associated with land, institutions and slow accumulation, and the one most likely to build something conventional and hold it. The caution is caution itself: analysis used to justify staying put.
Metal Snake · 辛巳 (Xin Si)
Years: 1941, 2001
Metal Snake (Xin Si) brings the branch's hidden Metal to the surface. Fire over Metal is the controlling relationship, and the tradition reads it as judgement sharpened into a working instrument: precision, elegance, an unsentimental eye for flaws in a plan or a person. The classical note is that Xin Si is the least forgiving of the five, including towards itself.
Water Snake · 癸巳 (Gui Si)
Years: 1953, 2013
Water Snake (Gui Si) sets Water over Fire, the element that controls the branch, which the texts read as an internal dialogue between warmth and doubt. It is the most reflective variant — philosophy, psychology, long private reconsideration — and the one whose reinventions are the most complete. The caution is hesitation, since the controlling element damps the Fire that would otherwise act.
Years in this table are calendar years. The zodiac year actually turns at Lichun (立春), around 4 February, not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year — so anyone born in January or early February of a listed year may belong to the previous sign. Check a specific date and time with the zodiac calculator. Check a birth date against Lichun.
Best and hardest matches for the Snake
| Sign | Score | Relationship in the branch tables | Full reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ox | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Snake and Ox |
| Rooster | 85 | Three Harmony 三合 | Snake and Rooster |
| Monkey | 60 | Six Harmony 六合 + Punishment 三刑 + Destruction 六破 | Snake and Monkey |
| Pig | 30 | Clash 六冲 | Snake and Pig |
| Tiger | 20 | Harm 六害 + Punishment 三刑 | Snake and Tiger |
Si's Six Harmony partner is the Monkey, but the same pair also stands in punishment and destruction, which the tradition calls combination with punishment inside it — an attraction the tables score in the middle rather than at the top. The Three Harmony frame is the metal trine with the Ox and the Rooster, read as the alliance of patience, precision and strategy, and in practice the Snake's strongest working relationships. Opposite sits the Pig, the Six Clash. The Tiger is in harm with Si and shares the Yin–Si–Shen punishment group.
Lucky colours, numbers and direction
| Role | Element | Colours | Numbers | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own element (巳) | Fire 火 | red, purple | 2, 7 | South |
| Supporting element (produces Fire) | Wood 木 | green, teal | 3, 8 | East |
Si's fixed element is Fire, so the traditional colours are red and purple, the numbers two and seven, and the direction due South in the five-element scheme, with South-southeast as the branch's own compass sector. Wood produces Fire, so green and teal, three and eight, and the East form the classical supporting set. As everywhere on this site, these are cultural correspondences rather than advice.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is the Snake called the little dragon?
- Xiao long is a common polite substitution, partly because snake carries unwelcome associations in everyday speech and partly because the two are genuinely linked in iconography — Chinese dragons are serpentine, and Si and Chen sit next to each other in the cycle as the branches of late spring and early summer. The usage is cultural, not a change to any table.
- Is the Snake and Monkey pairing good or bad?
- Both, in the tables. Si and Shen form one of the six harmonies, which adds to the score, and they also sit in the Yin–Si–Shen punishment and in the six destructions, which subtract from it. Classical writers describe this as combination with punishment concealed in it, and the numerical result lands mid-range rather than high or low.
- What are the hidden stems of the Snake branch?
- Si holds Bing as its main stem, Geng as the middle and Wu as the residual — Fire on top, Metal and Earth beneath. Practitioners use that combination to explain why the sign reads as warm on the surface and analytical underneath, and why Metal-flavoured work such as law, engineering and medicine recurs in descriptions of it.
